Tsukiji Hongwanji, Chuo

3.9
#7 of 1,750 in Historic Sites in Tokyo
Experience the calm tranquility of Tsukiji Hongwanji, a Jodo Shinsu Buddhist site boasting an eclectic fusion of architectural styles. Originally constructed in the 17th century, the temple suffered from both fire and earthquake, with the structure you see today largely built in the 1930s. Approaching the entrance, note the South Asian influence on the ornate architecture, intended to reflect Buddhist, Hindu, and Islamic styles. Inside, discover artifacts of many eras of Buddhist and Japanese history, the significance of which have made this temple a popular pilgrimage site. Look for the gleaming pipe organ manufactured in West Germany, an unusual sight in a Buddhist temple. • Among the nearest subway stations, Tsukiji Station on the Hibiya Line is recommended. It is directly connected to Exit 1. You have to walk about five minutes at other subway stations. Please be careful because the entrance of the car is not the front but the south gate.

  • The Jodo Shinshu Nishi Honganji temple is famous for its unique stone building, which cannot be seen even with the Indian system. As soon as you leave Tsukiji Subway Station. The main hall is held behind the large front yard. The information center and the joint grave of the making that the left side are very modern. In fact, this information center is my best recommendation at Tsukiji Honganji. Inside, there's an information center, a very stylish cafe, book sales, a small conference hall, and so on, but this one is very nice. Western-style menu, kaiseki dishes, drinks that are not thought to be a temple's cafe、、、。 The breakfast on the set is more than 10 small bowls and porridge. I hear that there are many women who come for this. There are a lot of Japanese and Western dishes for lunch. The price is very reasonable and the view outside from the total glass-walled cafes is also pleasant. In the shop of the small goods sale, fashion items from stylish Buddhist goods, snacks are a little different, and it is cheap. If you come to Tsukiji, you should visit. The off-site market is good, but Honganji is just a stone's throw from the market. There is no Te who does not visit.

  • This is a unique Buddhist temple, due to its mixture of Japanese and Western architecture. Up until 5pm about you'll be able to visit the central hall of the temple for free. A very tranquil place with the smell of sage and cedar wood. Good for a little rest or a moment of metropolitan zen! Seats are available.
  • Cool place, as it's the only stone Buddhist temple I've seen, also built in such a western style. It was interesting to peek around, but there really wasn't a whole ton to see other than the main hall, which is built like a chapel. Felt a little weird, to be honest.
