Fukuoka Castle Ruins, Chuo

3.4
Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Perched on Fukusaki Hill in the downtown area, Fukuoka Castle Ruins offers a scenic walk in wooded Maizuru Park, with the Naka River forming a natural moat. Once the largest castle in Kyushu, spanning 47,000 sq m (505,900 sq ft) and featuring 47 turrets, this early Edo-period complex was completely torn down during the Meiji restoration, as it symbolize the unwanted feudal past. Only ruined walls, some turrets, and a few restored gates remind visitors of its past magnificence. Visit the small museum documenting the history of the castle, whose remains can be reached by foot from Ohori Koen station. • The best bit was the Main Gate, because after that there wasn't much we could find and there were three of us. We subsequently discovered that there isn't much left. In other words - don't bother  more »
  • Walking through the park to the castle was so invigorating. People were all so pleasant and helpful. Transportation from our hotel to the castle was very easy using the subway system. All bathrooms....  more »

  • Beautiful ruins to see and a couple places to learn about them. They have a video you can watch with different subtitles. The view from the base of the tower is wonderful and there are many places with shade. However, there aren’t many places there to get food, so bring your own or walk back out. And the signage isn’t the best.
  • Interesting as a small adventure. Not too much there though. Lots of walking too, for better or for worse.
