Park · Hidden Gem · Historic Site
Encircled by a picturesque moat and home to many renowned sites, the historic Kitanomaru Park makes a great location for a quiet stroll or a peaceful picnic in the sunshine. With relics of the famous Edo Castle dotted around the park--including the moat and castle gates--contrasted against the science and modern art museum now standing at the park, you can get a sense of the past melded with the future. Consider hiring a boat for a lazy row on the water, drifting beneath towering sukura trees. If you choose to visit around mid-May, be prepared to compete for space with other tourists here to admire the blossoming trees. Birdwatchers might want to bring along their binoculars, as the park houses many interesting avian species. Make Kitanomaru Park a centerpiece of your Tokyo vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Tokyo attractions planning site.

  • nice place to enjoy the scene and beautiful blossom.
  • It is the one part of the Imperial Palace ground open to the public and is directly connected to the Eastern Imperial Palace Gardens. Admission to both is free. Although large, the Kitanomaru Park and Eastern Gardens may not be as impressive as Kōrakuen or Rikugien, but they are well worth a visit, if only for the huge moats surrounding their northern and western sides and the great Tayasu-mon Gate on the Kudanshita side, which gives an idea of the fortress that Edo Castle once was.
