Sakitsu Catholic Church, Amakusa

4.2
Overlooking the picturesque harbor of a small, rustic fishing village, Sakitsu Catholic Church provides a lovely view of the area. With the present structure built in 1934 by a French missionary, the construction of this neo-Gothic cathedral was supervised by a Japanese architect, a fact reflected in its visible mixture of styles. The stairs above the cathedral lead to Sakistu Chapel Bells observation deck, from where you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding mountains, bays, and inlets. If you want to enter the cathedral, you will still need to remove your shoes. You can reach the site by bus, getting off at the Kyokai-iriguchi stop. • There was a sale such as fried satsuma in front of the shop of the fishing cooperative, and all of them were the best for a snack from about 100 yen. The church was wonderful! I feel the history. The sea is clean and relaxing.

  • I was interested in the church that Yosuke Tetsukawa made, and among them, Sakitsu Church was one of the churches that I always wanted to visit. The exterior of the church was much prettier and much more lovely than the photo.

  • Worth visiting and listen to their story if you around the neighborhood. There is a tourist information centre there as well.
  • Sakitsu World Heritage Village. Difficult to get to, but it's well worth it. If possible, avoid going there during the heat of summer, because of the many outdoor cats and their smell!
