  • If you are familiar with early English literature, you know about the Vercelli Book. It is an anthology of Old English prose and verse that dates back to the late 10th century. The Capitulary...  more »

  • FASCINATING SETTING up And BEAUTIFUL EXHIBITS within the celebrations for the 800 years after the construction of the Basilica of St. Andrew I visited this museum, which is next to the Duomo, recently rearranged and really nice. The showcases and the explanations are able to enhance very well the few but important exhibits exhibited. It's about fifty objects, no more, exhibited in 3 halls on the ground floor: The wooden statue that was in the Duomo, where there is currently a copy, the fabrics that filled it, Bacili, monstrances, pastoral sticks, sacred books, statuettes of the apostles, Corinthian capitals, Reliquaries and a thirteenth-century globe-actually a cloth that brings back the Christian world-is what you can see. The second room and the statuettes of the Apostles are wonderful! Each object is accompanied by a brief and simple explanation. At the beginning of the journey is explained the history of the building where the museum stands and a curious finding conserved in the Capitular Library: a book in ancient English of about a thousand years ago, probably left in Vercelli by a pilgrim travelling to Rome. A small room on the left preserves some frescoes and the work of a contemporary artist. Upstairs you can see a single room, the one that hosted the Pope visiting the city in 1998. There are a closet containing documents and sacred items and a bed. The visit takes about 45 minutes. The museum is open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday from 15 to 18 and Saturdays from 10 to 12 and from 15 to 18. It costs €5, free with museums subscription.

  • An extraordinary museum, with many masterpieces to admire (what a spectacle the great brass crucifix... to take your breath away) and real goodies such as the Vercelli World Map, a very rare medieval map fortuitously rediscovered and now very well valued. The Museum is well run by great professionals full of initiative, who know how to involve a wide audience with countless events and meetings of quality. An excellence, and not only Piedmont but at national and international level thanks to the centuries-old relationship with England that date back to the days of Guala Bicchieri. Chapeau.
