St. Mark's Square, Venice

4.5
Venice's principal public space, St. Mark's Square has served as the city's social, religious, and political center for centuries. In fact, Napoleon called the square "the drawing room of Europe." It's the largest square in the city and the only one given the designation of "piazza" (the others are all called "campi"). Originally constructed in the ninth century as a small public space dotted with trees, the square was substantially enlarged in the 12th century and was paved with bricks in the 13th. Several major architectural sites surround the area. The most notable is an imposing church dedicated to St. Mark. Don't feed the pigeons--city law forbids feeding the birds in the square. • Magnificent and huge plaza with good architecture and culture all around it. The St. Marks church is beautiful and one of a kind with its dome and beautiful art. The clock tower, the two real columns with statues on it and political houses all look amazing even more so Street sunset when the lights come on. The waterway at one end is jam packed with gondolas operated by many businesses. There are numerous shops and restaurants along this plaza and you can take it all in by walk. Venice is a very popular tourist spot so it's no surprise that this plaza is always packed with people but it somehow feels so good and in awe looking at the history and culture of this place. A must visit if you visit Venice.
  • What can say one of the kind! sister or polo square in Isfahan! So much history here from Persian traders in 15 centuries to Galileo telescope! Your brain is going to explode from beauty, history, art and fashion. Oh the food is excellent too. The only problem it is always busy!
  • Busiest spot in Venice... visited the square on Summer and Winter time... personally I prefer it on Summer time as it has less crowd. Birds are very brave and do not get scared of humans in St. Marco. I do not recommend the cafe's on the square being very busy and expensive... ways try to check the smaller restaurants and cafe's in the narrow streets. All in all Venice is a place to visit at least once in life time, and St. Marco square is one major spot in Venice
  • A magnificent space. Surrounded by shops and cafes. to suit all pockets. The one thing that’s in short supply is seating. All the seats in the square are for the cafes. We found the best time to enjoy the square was early evening.
  • An awesomely beautiful space with shops all around and restaurants and store fronts that allows for easy shopping and browsing. Enjoy a gelato while strolling the piazzas and enjoying the beautiful, detailed architecture of the cathedral, bell tower. The views from the river. Boats docking. People watching. Just a surreal environment with so many choices of things to do and see in the square. Be cautioned though.. Do not feed the pigeons... you will be fined!!!
