Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Veneto / Province of Venice / City of Venice / Venice / St Mark's Campanile
Overlooking the city's famous lagoon, St Mark's Campanile is one of the Venice's most recognizable symbols. Originally constructed as a lighthouse, this 99 m (323 ft) tall bell tower stands alone in one corner of St. Mark's Square. The tower's simple form has a fluted brick shaft topped by a belfry housing five bells. A pyramidal spire with a golden weathervane in the form of the archangel Gabriel caps the tower. Constructed in the ninth century on ancient Roman foundations, the bell tower underwent a massive reconstruction after a sudden collapse in 1902. Once the site of Galileo's observatory, the tower now features an elevator for easy access to the top and views of the lagoon and distant Alps. Very beautiful. Time seems to have not passed, even today we admire these beautiful monuments imposing with the Lions symbol of the Veneta royalty.
more »Overlooking Piazza San Marco, the bell tower stands out. I want to overlook from the top, to the line of admission. It was saved because it was not a long procession. I paid 8 euros to buy a ticket and went to the elevator because I was immune from the Vatican. The view of the overlooking 360 degrees was spectacular. It is a feeling that it came to Venice exactly. I went around slowly and got off. I wish I had a little more eyes on the net that had been pasted some complaints.
8 euros to go up the tower take a jacket if its cloudy gets quite cool and breezy as its open at the top. Don't let the large queue fool you it moves quite quick no stairs only a lift so getting to the top is easy. Fantastic views good value well worth it
Best plaza and cathedral in Venice. The campanile tower gives you an amazing view of Venice. Arrive early in the mornings for a beautiful view and to beat the queue. The view of the grand canal is really pleasing.
