Island · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
The site of the Venice Film Festival, Lido runs 11 km (7 mi) along northern Italy but is separated from the mainland by a strip of water. The sandbar island is home to 20,000 Venetian residents and a handful of casinos and hotels. Many of the hotels are near a wide beach along the Adriatic Sea. This spot inspired Thomas Mann's novel "Death in Venice." The sandbar, now a tourist haven, once was home to the doge of Venice, as well as to one of the first settlements in the region. Check out British traveler writer Robin Saikia's history of the island in "The Venice Lido" for a comprehensive overview of the island's history.
