Ente Gondola, Venice

#3 of 63 in Outdoors in Venice
On Ente Gondola, you can see city landmarks from the water. Your knowledgeable gondolier will share the history and may even serenade you in Italian. To earn a license, gondoliers must demonstrate knowledge of local history, foreign languages, and gondola steering skills. For centuries, gondolas were a chief method of transport through Venice. Nearly 10,000 filled the canals in the 17th and 18th centuries. The iconic, banana-shaped boats are docked around the city, especially at San Marco Square. You can hail one of the city's 425 gondolas on the spot or book a ride online. Domenico Tramontin created the current shape and handmade construction method in the 19th century. His descendants still run the Tramontin boatyard, where they make gondolas out of eight kinds of wood.
