Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, Venice

4.6
Discover the city’s religious and artistic heritage at Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, one of the landmark buildings on the Grand Canal. The history of this building goes back to the early 17th century, when the city experienced a devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the people’s deliverance from this pestilence, the city vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or Deliverance). The church was designed in the then-fashionable Baroque style, and construction began in 1631. Most of the art housed inside the church bears some reference to the historic plague. The emblematic dome of this building was an important addition to the city’s skyline, said to have inspired numerous artists, including Canaletto and J.M.W. Turner, among many others. Drop by the church’s famous facade, which is embellished with 125 statues. • It is a bit of a trip to get there by walking and honestly not sure it was worth it. Nothing great to look at inside and while it is nice from a distance, up close it just looks dirty.  more »

  • Amazing Basilica. I decided to make my way over from San Marco after a week of looking at it form afar. I was not disappointed. This is a must see place in Venice.
  • Beautiful church with the base in the form of an octagon. This church catches the eye from the main Venice island and is reachable either by ferry or by a bridge a little away from the St. Mark's square. Pretty good from the inside as well. The location is very nice...right at the tip of the small triangular island.
  • Beautiful looking church. Great place to sit and relax and great views over looking the start of the Grand Canal and San Marco area 😀
  • Gorgeous church in a secluded but scenic location. Definitely worth visiting. The inside is very quiet and peaceful unlike San Marco basilica. The artwork is beautiful and easy to sit and admire. Free entry too. It's also worth visiting at night to hear the bells play.
  • Iconic place, very relaxing to just sit outside or nearby. It offers spectacular views and it's near the top of the island which you can just sit by the water and absorb all the vibes.
