Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Veneto / Province of Venice / City of Venice / Venice / Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute
Discover the city’s religious and artistic heritage at Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, one of the landmark buildings on the Grand Canal. The history of this building goes back to the early 17th century, when the city experienced a devastating outbreak of the plague. As a votive offering for the people’s deliverance from this pestilence, the city vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or Deliverance). The church was designed in the then-fashionable Baroque style, and construction began in 1631. Most of the art housed inside the church bears some reference to the historic plague. The emblematic dome of this building was an important addition to the city’s skyline, said to have inspired numerous artists, including Canaletto and J.M.W. Turner, among many others. Drop by the church’s famous facade, which is embellished with 125 statues. Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute Reviews
It was nice to finally see the inside of the church, whose iconic image is often seen in photos, on calendars, and views of the Grand Canal. It had its own vaporetto stop, so was easy to get to. Built... more »
Forse la chiesa più bella di Venezia, e uno dei vertici dell'architettura barocca, Santa Maria della Salute si erge sopra l'acqua come un fiore di loto pronto a sbocciare, con le sue forme dolci e sin... more »Perhaps the most beautiful church in Venice, and one of the summits of Baroque architecture, Santa Maria della Salute rises above the water like a lotus flower ready to blossom, with its sweet and sinuous forms. The octagonal interior, which houses paintings by Titian and Tintoretto, is large and luminous, and the churchyard offers a splendid view of the Grand Canal.
Beautiful church both inside and outside. Makes for great pictures. Inside you are asked to be respectful and quiet. You can light a candle for 1 euro. You walk round the edge of the inside of the circle, barriers preventing you from walking through the centre. At the far end opposite the entrance, is a space reserved for prayer.
This church is absolutely gorgeous and deliciously quiet inside. Make sure you come in for vespers at 15:30 every day. There’s a lovely nave at the back that you can pray/sit in and listen to the wonderful organ. You can also listen from just outside but it really is a beautiful experience to sit and listen from within the nave.
