#4 of 15 in Historic Sites in Vatican City
Cupola di San Pietro is the dome atop St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the most famous attractions in the area. You can climb to the top of the dome for breathtaking views of the city, but be warned that it is a challenging ascent. An elevator will take you up the first section. To reach the very top, you climb a spiral staircase without a handrail. Visitors early in the day will find the shortest lines. • If possible, climb the dome of Peter's Cathedral. Better - early in the morning (hours at 8, at 10 already queue) or closer to closing (not so hot). The view is beautiful! It will be difficult to go up unprepared physically. Not everyone can master more than 500 steps. I immediately took a more expensive ticket to take part of the elevator (the difference in price - 2 euros, do not regret!, friends went on foot and not tired). After the elevator 350 steps - the most difficult - small winding narrow steps. But - in the beginning is not so narrow and you can relax - others will be able to get around you, do not interfere. Then the passage is a little narrow - but there are "pro-lights" with windows where you can sit down. Knowing that I have no physical training, a breathlessness from smoking and all that, I just climbed very slowly. I will pass - I will stop for 5 minutes to breathe to normal at...

  • Be sure to climb the dome of the cathedral. It offers panoramic views of the Vatican and Rome. In addition, there is an inexpensive souvenir shop. I recommend climbing in the early morning.

  • Wow! What an amazing place. The energy, vibe and atmosphere is really something! You can feel the history as you stroll through the square, basilica and museum. Highly recommend the City Wonder guided tour. The lines are very long as they have 25,000 visitors per day. Take this guided your and skip the lines and have your own personal guide. Well worth it!
  • The name and location pretty much says it all. What an unbelievable structure and quality craftsmanship there. So much history and attention to detail. If and when you go here take a moment to look at the quality of the materials and think about how hard and time-consuming it was to create such a beautiful place. Absolutely unbelievable.
