A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, Necropoli di Tarquinia is made up of over 6,000 Etruscan graves, some of which date back as far as the 7th century BCE. Visit the many gravesites scattered around the hillside, and take the stairs down into each burial chamber, where you can press a button to illuminate the space. Most artifacts have been pilfered, or removed to museums, but what remains is still impressive. The walls of these chambers are filled with colorful frescoes that depict the daily life of the Etruscans, and shed light on some of their ideas about the afterlife. Pay a visit to the nearby archeological museum to learn more about the Etruscans and see artifacts from their time. Necropoli di Tarquinia Reviews
Sito molto ben curato dotato di buone spiegazioni che orientano anche chi non conosce il popolo etrusco. more »Very well cared site with good explanations that orient even those who do not know the Etruscan people.
Siamo andati su suggerimento della titolare dell'albergo visto che non faceva bellissimo. Una bella giornata catapultati dagli Etruschi. Mettete scarpe comode che da girare sicuramente non manca! more »We went at the hotel owner's suggestion since it wasn't that great. A beautiful day catapulted by the Etruscans. Put comfortable shoes that to turn surely not miss!
An interesting site, but not always easy to see the paintings as they are down narrow stairs behind glass covered in condensation. The number of tombs is impressive, but the ones at Cerveteri give a much better idea of what the burial sites were like. If you go by public transport, the last bus passes at 5.20.
A large burial where Etruscans in pre-Roman times buried there dead in large vaults. Over 4000 vaults have been discovered. The limestone rock was particularly good at preserving the frescoes painted on the Rock walls.
