Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Tuscany / Province of Siena / Siena / Palazzo Pubblico and Museo Civico
Located on Sienna’s central square, Palazzo Pubblico and Museo Civico was built to house the Republican government at the end of the 13th century, and now is home to the civic museum. The impressive bell tower was built between 1325 and 1344, and was at the time the highest structure in the country. Ascend the tower to look out over the city, or tour the building to see some of the first non-religious paintings within its walls. Frescoes are present in most rooms, and depict battle scenes, landscapes, and other aspects of medieval life. Don't miss the most famous, a series of three panels painted by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, which are called collectively The Allegory of Bad Government. Situado en la Plaza del Campo fue antiguo Palacio Comunal. Hoy es sede del Ayuntamiento y de un Museo. Está presidido por la esbelta torre del Mangia. Muy interesante. more »Located in the Plaza del Campo was former Communal Palace. Today it is the headquarters of the City Hall and a Museum. It is presided over by the slender tower of Mangia. Very interesting.
The views from the top of the tower are fantastic but be warned that the stairs are extremely tight and it's a very long climb which might not suit some. You can still go slowly however, and if your squeeze into corners it's not too bad to let people pass in either direction. The museum is a little underwhelming but you can also go upstairs to the second floor terrace which is a relatively quiet space with a decent view. It is a bit expensive for what you get, compared to the Duomo.
Beautiful piece of Late Medieval history. The old center of Government for the Commune of Siena for almost a thousand years.
