Torre Grossa, San Gimignano

4.6
#4 of 17 in Historic Sites in San Gimignano
Steeped in history, Torre Grossa draws visitors with its intricate architecture, important artwork, and impressive views of Tuscany. The 13th-century palace stands on the ruins of an even older building. As the seat of local government for centuries, the building houses civic offices of the town council on the ground floor. Explore the upper levels to find the civic museum and gallery, featuring the former council chamber, and beautiful frescoes painted by the likes of Coppo di Marcovaldo, Lippo Memmi, and Benozzo Gozzoli. Climb to the top of the palace's tower for one of the best views of Tuscany. To visit Torre Grossa and other attractions in San Gimignano, use our San Gimignano holiday website .

  • You will visit Dante's room and a small but interesting art gallery and climb to the highest tower in the town, from where you can see spectacular views of the town and its surroundings. From 01/04 to 31/10 open every day from 10 to 19:30h. Winter time is a little bit smaller. There is a combined ticket that for thirteen euros allows to visit the main attractions of the city, including Torre Grossa and the Duomo.

  • In the central Piazza del Duomo, the Civic Palace completes the austere and noble aspect of the city centre; Its proportions tend to develop in height, and the adjacent big Tower completes the picture; Inside is housed the Civic museum and you can climb to the top of the panoramic tower.
