Spiagge Bianche, Rosignano Marittimo

We came here hopeful to find a sandy beach after a few disappointing, rocky beaches in Italy. We were told of a beach near Castiglioncello that had white sand and blue water similar to that of carribbean beaches. We arrived to the famous Spiagge Bianche of Tuscany to find that there was a large chemical plant no further than a kilometer away from the water and worst, after checking out the satellite view, we came to see that the plant dumps its waste directly into the ocean. Needless to say, this ruined our stay in Rosignano-solvay. We didn't want to bathe, let alone take our child into such water. Furthermore, we found it outrageous that this entity (Solvay Chemical) had been dumping mercury, lead, arsenic and a myriad of other hazardous chemical byproducts for years. According to some articles they have reduced the amount of waste they dump significantly as of 10 years ago but I wouldn't trust these claims. Do the research yourself and come up with your own conclusions. I would strongly advise against bathing here.
