St. Angelo Bridge, Rome

#58 of 2,918 in Things to do in Rome
Follow in the footsteps of the pilgrims who traversed St. Angelo Bridge to reach St. Peter's Basilica, and you'll see the top of the castle where--legend has it--an angel appeared to announce the end of the plague. Roman Emperor Hadrian built the triple-arched, travertine marble-faced bridge crossing the Tiber river in 134 CE. Stately statues of angels watch over the structure, reminding visitors of the miracle. During the jubilee of 1450, so many pilgrims walked over the bridge at once that the balustrades broke, and many drowned in the river. Look for the space at the head of the bridge where houses and a Roman arch were torn down to give them more room. Although the bridge is closed to vehicles, you can walk across and take in the views of the Castel Sant'Angelo. • The bridge is crowded, but it makes a very big impression. There is a wonderful view of the neighbouring basilica. PS. It is possible to hang on the bridge of Love padlock:)

  • Again back from the Vatican, on the way to Piazza Navona, we find ourselves transiting this bridge, among the crowd of cheerful tourists, sheltered by Bernini's beautiful sculptures. Another magical site of the Romans.

  • Really cool place with statues adorning it on both sides. You should definitely visit it at sunset and at night to get different views of it. Also, it becomes a romantic place at night time (given the lights, decor and the music) coming from restaurants and bars that spring up just by the river. You can have dinner by the river at night. Lovely place.
  • This bridge provides such a spectacular view of St. Peter's Basilica and the River Tiber. The bridge can be a bit crowded, as one can imagine, but there are some times of day where it's not so bad. However, those times will not be night times. But, people seem mostly willing to allow you some time to snap a picture or two.
