Piazza Venezia, Rome

4.4
#19 of 526 in Historic Sites in Rome
Once a Roman circus, Piazza Venezia is now one of the city's busiest thoroughfares and historic centers. Visit the square to admire Il Vittoriano. This massive, pantheon-style marble monument is dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II, united Italy's first king. Climb to the top for a different vantage point of the plaza's architecture. Visit the Palazzo Venezia, constructed in the 15th century by future Pope Paul II, as well as the 1,900-year-old Trajan's column, a Roman victory monument. The square is a major traffic intersection, so be careful when crossing the streets. • It is surrounded by monuments of great historical, cultural and artistic interest and, in fact, constitutes a great road junction where the most important streets of Rome's historic center converge. On either side of the square are Palazzo Venezia, which houses the national museum, and on the other side is the Insurance Palace. The Victorian dominates the whole square, its construction has cost the demolition of the medieval quarter.

  • Ara coeli and tram stop. Staying in Trastevere was the focal point of our travels.
