Galleria Borghese, Rome

4.5
#1 of 160 in Museums in Rome
Galleria Borghese is housed in a villa once used for elegant private parties. The art gallery contains a substantial part of a collection of paintings and sculptures amassed by Scipione Borghese, a 17th-century cardinal and art patron. Borghese was an early benefactor of artists Caravaggio and Bernini. You can explore 20 rooms across two floors. The main floor is mostly devoted to the period between the first and the third centuries, featuring mosaics of gladiators and several sculptures. In other sections of the gallery, you can see works by such artists as Canova, Raphael, Correggio, Titian, Rubens, and Veronese. An advance ticket, which you can book on the gallery's website, is required. • A relaxed and culturally rich guided tour. The large garden with the various artists ' quarters are to be seen. Note that the artists do not like visitors so silence when you visit.

  • It is absolutely worth it! It is impressive to see so many works of art, so many paintings, sculptures and also the walls, ceilings, everything is art and is very careful so that there are not so many people! The entrance is with day and hour!

  • Loved it here. Incredible collection of Bernini and Caravaggio. Incredibly impressive gallery. Incredible gardens and park. I think it's a must see and a must experience esp if into and love the art. Go walk around the area if anything. So much around.
  • Although we had been to Rome a number of times we had never managed to visit this gallery. Not for want of trying though! You really need to book tickets in advance or you risk not getting in. It's well worth a visit. And the park itself is a lovely way to spend a few hours too.
