Catacombe San Sebastiano, Rome

4.2
#47 of 526 in Historic Sites in Rome
Catacombe San Sebastiano is one of many catacombs in Rome. These underground burial places were first built in the first century CE to deal with the overcrowding in traditional cemeteries. Follow your tour guide through the tunnels and learn about the history of this underground burial ground. Begin your tour from the basilica that houses the marble tomb of St. Sebastian, for whom these catacombs are named. Wander through the dim underground passages and examine the Christian and pagan wall tombs, ancient graffiti, and many relics. To spend more time in the tunnels and see the relics more intimately, schedule a private tour--the catacombs are not accessible without a guide. Dress warmly, as temperatures are much cooler underground. Make Catacombe San Sebastiano part of your personalized Rome itinerary using our Rome trip planner.

  • The Catacombs of San Sebastian are on the Appia Way, you get there by Bus de Linea de Roma which is taken in Piazza Venezia, one of the stops is the entrance to the catacombs, are called so because that below the church of San Sebastian that is where besides this The saint's grave. We went in the morning, in Summer the heat is impressive on the Appia Way, the entrance includes a guided tour that is in different languages so we expect the Spanish. The visit shows a tour of the Christian catacombs and also shows a Roman part that is very different, you can also see the inscriptions that refer to Peter and Paul of the Christians of the early days. We dress the Catacombs, the church and then walk along the Appia Way. They do not allow taking photos inside the catacombs.

  • Nice affordable landmark. Guided tour that doesn't take an hour. But at that time you will discover how they used to go with the dead. Especially the church at the end was very impressive to see

  • If you have never been to see Catacombs then be sure to stop and take this tour! It is a must see if you are in Rome. It takes 30 minutes and on a hot summer day the temperature underground is nice and cool! What you will see is amazing. Unfortunately you cannot take photos but it is amazing the tunnels that were dug 2000 years ago and how they buried their dead. There's an underground alter and a couple of restored burial tombs for wealthy families. You can take a taxi here or it's an easy 35min walk from the coliseum.
  • We did the catacombs walking tour, it was an moving and memorable experience. Respect to the remarkable history of these locations. Both disturbing and uplifting.
