Commissioned by Pope Hadrian in the eighth century, Basilica di Santa Prassede in the heart of Rome is a detailed example of early Christian religious architecture. Admire the basilica's Carolingian-era frescoes and carvings, representative of the ongoing artistic renaissance during its construction. Marvel at the large, marble columns lining the apse as you examine religious artifacts from centuries past, including the tombs of several important figures. Note the detail put into the church's massive, intricate mosaic in the main room. You'll see depictions of biblical events and the life of its namesake, St. Praxedes. For a small fee, you can try out the chapel's decorative lighting system. See Basilica di Santa Prassede and all Rome has to offer by arranging your trip with our Rome tour itinerary maker site.

For mosaic lovers this is the church to go. The mosaic in the apse is remarkable and the one chapel is even better.

The Church is full of art but is in a bad state of preservation. Still worth visiting especially to see the mosaic above and behind the main altar. Pictures of this mosaic are very easy to encounter online and on books as it is a very good example of early Christian art. You could also visit the sarcofagi with the remains of many Christian martyrs, which can be accessed from a staircase below and in front of the main altar.
