Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, a 16th-century church designed by Michelangelo, was built on the remains of the Baths of the Diocletian and is dedicated to the Christians who died constructing the baths. The church was previously the official state church of the kingdom of Italy. Today, national burials are held here. You can find the tombs of Gen. Armando Diaz and Adm. Paolo Thaon di Revel, both famous for their efforts in World War II. Pope Clement XI commissioned the 18th-century meridian line you can see on the marble floor. To learn how to read meridian lines, you can buy a book from the small store inside the church. In the courtyard, you can't miss the 5 m (16.4 ft) bronze statue of Galileo Galilei Divine Man, designed by Nobel laureate Tsung-Dao Lee in 1957). • Of all my stops in Rome, this was by far my favorite. And it happened by chance. The unassuming entrance leads you to a truly awe inspiring interior, full of gorgeous paintings, sculptures and religious history. Mass is still celebrated here. If you are a lady, please be sure to wear clothing that covers your shoulders and front. This is a must visit if you are ever in Rome.
  • It was interesting to see Holy Church, Science, astrology, history and see and untouched ceiling altogether. Just makes you wonder what amazing murals we missed due to an early death of the painter. The most important, just in time to finish with our Lord’s blessings after Mass.
