Battistero degli Ariani, Ravenna

4.6
Admire the exquisite ceiling mosaic at Battistero degli Ariani, a Christian monument and World Heritage Site. Built at the end of the 5th century by Ostrogothic ruler of Ravenna Theodoric, the structure was reconsecrated as an oratory dedicated to the Virgin Mary after the fall of Arian rule in 561. The only remaining decoration within the walls of the octagonal building is the intricate mosaic that adorns the ceiling. Look up to view the scenes depicting the baptism of Christ surrounded by the twelve apostles. • A small building from the late 5th century, a little bit "in the shadow" of other Ravenna´s churches with mosaics. Beautiful ceiling mosaic depicting the baptism of Jesus Christ inspired by very similar mosaic in Neonian Baptistery. Definitely worth a visit.
  • Really beautiful and interesting place. The price is very good. Don't miss this!
