  • The church of Santa Maria Assunta is the cathedral of Policastro Bussentino and a cathedral of the diocese of Teggiano-Policastro. The origins of the church are uncertain. Its oldest part is the crypt, built in the 6th century on pre-existing Roman times. The current church is 11th century, built at the behest of Norman King Roberto the Guiscardo and consecrated by the Bishop of Salerno Alfano I in 1079. The Romanesque construction underwent major restorations in the Baroque sense in the 18th century (between 1709 and 1716), interventions that mainly concerned the interior. The interior of the cathedral was three aisles until the 18th century remakes. Today it is presented with a single aisle with side altars and the chapel of the Holy Sacrament (1627). The wooden ceiling of the nave is composed of canvases from 1655, of which at the center is the depiction of the Assumption of Mary. The domed ceiling of the presbytery is frescoed with a scene of Paradise (18th century) and, in the plumes, the representations of the four evangelists.

  • Suggestive and charming very beautiful especially the ceiling. I also recommend the visit because a gentleman in a voluntary way took us to visit the catacombs inside the cathedral explaining the whole history of the place.
