It's amazing place. We came to see a local church, but director showed us so many ancients stuff inside like egypt pillars, greek statues, whose heads were cut by Napoleon's soldiers, the plafond... more »

La chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta è il duomo di Policastro Bussentino e concattedrale della diocesi di Teggiano-Policastro. Incerte sono le origini della chiesa. La sua parte più antica è la cripta, edificata nel VI secolo su preesistenze di epoca romana. L'attuale chiesa invece è dell'XI secolo, edificata per volere del re normanno Roberto il Guiscardo e consacrata dal vescovo di Salerno Alfano I nel 1079. La costruzione romanica subì importanti interventi di restauro in senso barocco nel Settecento (tra il 1709 ed il 1716), interventi che riguardarono soprattutto gli interni. L'interno della cattedrale era a tre navate fino ai rifacimenti settecenteschi. Oggi si presenta con un'unica navata con altari laterali e la cappella del Santissimo Sacramento (1627). Il soffitto ligneo della navata è composto da tele del 1655, di cui al centro la raffigurazione dell’Assunzione di Maria. Il soffitto a cupola del presbiterio è affrescato con una scena del Paradiso (XVIII secolo) e, nei pennacchi, le rappresentazioni dei quattro evangelisti.

The church of Santa Maria Assunta is the cathedral of Policastro Bussentino and a cathedral of the diocese of Teggiano-Policastro. The origins of the church are uncertain. Its oldest part is the crypt, built in the 6th century on pre-existing Roman times. The current church is 11th century, built at the behest of Norman King Roberto the Guiscardo and consecrated by the Bishop of Salerno Alfano I in 1079. The Romanesque construction underwent major restorations in the Baroque sense in the 18th century (between 1709 and 1716), interventions that mainly concerned the interior. The interior of the cathedral was three aisles until the 18th century remakes. Today it is presented with a single aisle with side altars and the chapel of the Holy Sacrament (1627). The wooden ceiling of the nave is composed of canvases from 1655, of which at the center is the depiction of the Assumption of Mary. The domed ceiling of the presbytery is frescoed with a scene of Paradise (18th century) and, in the plumes, the representations of the four evangelists.

Suggestiva e affascinante molto bella specialmente il soffitto . Consiglio la visita anche perchè un signore in modo volontario ci ha portato a visitare le catacombe all'interno della cattedrale spiegandoci tutta la storia del luogo.

Suggestive and charming very beautiful especially the ceiling. I also recommend the visit because a gentleman in a voluntary way took us to visit the catacombs inside the cathedral explaining the whole history of the place.
