Located in the Walnut Valley, on the crest of Mount Maggio, the sanctuary of the Madonna della Stella was founded in 1308 by the Augustinian Fathers ' initiative. Visited in February 2019 the Hermitage is accessible and can be reached after a short distance to walk. Recommended comfortable clothing, preferably with trekking shoes.
UPDATE 9 March 2019: After an inspection on the spot I confirm that it is again possible to reach the parking spot in the car. From the pitch it is mandatory to continue on foot with hiking or gym shoes. Unfortunately the river bed and valley have been submerged by the debris of a landslide, however the stairs leading to the hermitage are safe to pass. The church that contains the fresco is closed, you can only peek from the windows of the entrance. The upper area with the monks' cells, the garden and an ancient Roman oven are still accessible and accessible. Ps. At the moment there are no functioning drinking water points, so have a bottle before you arrive. Description: Originally hermitage of the first Syrian monks who settled in the Valnerina, after being abandoned it was rebuilt and used around the year 1000. S.Rita da Cascia also came to this place on a pilgrimage, it is said to mean under the waterfall that gushed near the hermitage (which unfortunately due to the landslide has disappeared). The fresco inside represents several scenes, including The Breastfeeding Madonna, St. Michael Archangel, the Christ who rises from the tomb.
