Chiesa di Santa Maria del Carmine, Pavia

4.5
Santa Maria del Carmine is a church in Pavia, Lombardy, northern Italy, considered amongst the best examples of Lombard Gothic architecture. It was begun in 1374 by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Duke of Milan, on a project attributed to Bernardo da Venezia. The construction followed a slow pace, and was restarted in 1432, being finished in 1461.ExteriorThe church has an imposing façade commanding the square with the same name; the slender forms betray a residual Romanesque influence, although the decorations are undoubutably of Lombard Gothic style. The façade is divided into five vertical compartments by six pilasters surmounted by spires. The three central sectors have a portal each, remade by Giuseppe Marchesi in 1854. Over the portals are four large ogival mullioned windows and an elaborated rose window in brickwork. The bell tower, dating to c. 1450, has numerous friezes and a triple mullioned window with marble columns.InteriorThe interior is characterized by an inspiring penumbra, and is on the Latin cross plan with a nave and numerous lateral chapels with frescoes and paintings. The most important are: 2nd Chapel, with a fresco by Vincenzo Foppa (1462)4th Chapel, with a canvas of the Guardian Angel by Sebastiano Ricci (1694)5th Chapel, with an Assumption by Bernardo Cane6th Chapel, with an altarpiece of St. Anne and the Wool Making Craft (by Guglielmo Caccia)7th Chapel, housing a Gothic altarpiece donated by Pius X, and 15th century polyptych with Madonna and Saints'' (by Bernardino da Cotignola). In the transept are also precious 15th-century frescoes, while the sacristy (1576) has façade with Baroque stuccoes. Also notable is the Gothic tabernacle (1449) and the marble altar of the presbytery.

  • Typical Lombard Gothic architectural style: the construction, which began in the late 1300s, was completed in the mid-1400s. Revolt on the square of the same name, a massive facade, in terracotta; only partly lightened by the openings: at the bottom 3 portals, above 4 bifurcaus and on the sides 2 monophores, above still a large white stone rosette surrounded by terracotta decorations. On the top of the facade 7 pinnacles. On the central door a bezel with 19th-century sculpture depicting the Annunciation. Interior with Latin cross, with three aisles, of which the center is separated from the sides by bundles of columns. The nave is much higher than the two sides, on each of which open eight chapels. The sharp archvaults, are highlighted by ribs, cooked like pillars, whose color contrasts with the white vaults. The soft light gives the interior an ancient and fascinating atmosphere.

  • This church still preserve the charm of sacred spaces. True haven of tranquillity if you are looking for a place of quiet and meditation. Relevant works of art and frescoes enrich the different chapels and the main altar.
  • The Church of Santa Maria del Carmine is one of the most important places of Catholic worship in the city of Pavia and is a notable example of Lombard Gothic. It is a 10-minute walk from Pavia station. As soon as you arrive you can see that the church has an imposing façade and as soon as you enter we notice its structure, a Latin cross plant with three naves.
