Cattedrale di Palermo, Palermo

4.6
Cattedrale di Palermo was erected in 1185 to replace a ninth-century mosque. Explore the church and observe the different styles--attributed to a long history of additions, alterations, and restorations--that characterize the building. Look for the column with the Quran verse carved on it, a remnant from the mosque, and admire the 13th-century mosaic of the Madonna. The Sacrament chapel is adorned with precious stones and lapis lazuli. You can visit the tombs of several important figures who have been laid to rest here, including Emperor Henry VI, Peter II of Sicily, and Constance of Aragon. Head to the roof for views of the city. • A magnificent cathedral in the heart of Palermo, the result of the fusion of different styles, stands where in the beginning there was a Christian church and a mosque, therefore always a place of worship. The architecture on both the outside and the interior is breathtaking. Don't miss the visit on the rooftops, from which you can see the whole city in its splendour.

  • Very beautiful monument, the roof (it is deserved by a narrow staircase, dark and with high and uneven steps) and the crypt are not to be missed.

  • Very nice and beautiful spot. Definitely worth a visit. We visited this site more than once. Beautiful beautiful place, the kids can run around, awesome atmosphere and a great place to grab a drink, chill and enjoy life. This spot really shows the historical and impressive Italian art. Would recommend that you go check out this spot!
  • It might be the best case to talk about architectural style. The mixed if Gothic, Baroque and even Islamic. No one can drive the style of Sicily because the Sicilian are free birds!
