  • Magical place of knowledge and ancient manuscripts, the highest expression of the genius of the arch. Damiani Almejda (the same one who designed the Teatro Politeama) that in the central room of reading and preservation conceived this unique volume supported by 4 huge central pillars. In the exterior decorations, with a strong impact with a revival of neoclassical decorative apparatus, the Almejda used contrasting polychrome which exalts its thickness and composure. The architectural complex uses a portion of the former convent of S. Nicolò da Tolentino after it passed among the Dispossespropriated property to the church after 1860. Recently restored and refurbished according to the new archival functions, it is often home to conferences and temporary exhibitions and the staff is available to let the locals visit. The surrounding area is also characterized by the presence of finds from the Jewish citadel of the Giudecca Palermitana, expelled from the city for the Spanish edict of 1492.

  • The historical archive of the city of Palermo, in 1865 was transferred to the premises of the former convent of S. Nicolò da Tolentino that had been suppressed after the revolution of 1860. The place was the one where the ancient synagogue of Palermo was located, inside the Jewish quarter. Inside the Great Hall designed in 1881 by architect Damiani Almeyda welcomes the scholar and the visitor with his height and beauty, to continue in the adjoining halls of finance and skylights. The archival complex collects seven kilometers of documents pertaining to the city life, from 1300 until the first of 1900. Periodically we organize exhibitions and lectures on the city history.
