Vesuvius National Park, Ottaviano

4.1
#1 of 167 in Parks in Province of Naples
The only active volcano on the European mainland, Vesuvius National Park is best known for its dramatic eruption in 79 CE, which led to the destruction of ancient cities Herculaneum and Pompeii. The volcano is now the centerpiece of a national park, established in 1995 to prevent further development in the area. The summit of the volcano is open to visitors, with a network of well-maintained paths around the mountain. An access road can get you to about 200 m (660 ft) from the summit (measured vertically), but after that access is on foot only. A spiral walkway leads up the final section of the climb, from the road to the rim of the crater. On a sunny day, you'll have sweeping views of the surrounding area, stretching all the way to the Bay of Naples. • It's an experience to have. Better if in spring or autumn. We did it in June, in a scorching heat and in the middle of a river of people; really seemed to be in hell. Beautiful view, perfect for any kind of photo. One little point less for the relevant costs for the visit (between bus and entrance, being in five, we paid 100.00 euros)

  • Have you visited Pompeii? Do you have at least 3 more hours available? Go visit Vesuvius. From Pompeii I followed directly to Vesuvio through a travel company that sells tickets in front of the train station. 10 Euros round trip. It is worth it since the municipal bus that practically divides the same point with the company charges a little more than 6 euros but by the conversations, it will stop at some points on the way leaving even more time-consuming displacement. The company leaves you at the entrance of the park and still sells the tickets inside the bus for the same price of the ticket office. The ascent is easy but it can be a drama for the poorly prepared (but the look compensates). With small child I would evaluate a lot... At the top walk to the end of the area prepared for the walk, there you can have a view muuuuuiiiittttooo distant from Pompeii.

  • On a hot June day it was a 30 minute climb up from the last car park (taxi drop off) for two middle aged averagely fit people. The surface is quite loose and deep in places making it a bit like walking uphill on a beach, but the climb wasn't too steep as the path meandered nicely. Fantastic views over Naples from the top, and of course of the inside of the top of the volcano. A long stretch of view points around about two thirds of the rim. There is also a cafe and souvenir shop at the top! The journey down was much quicker.
  • We went up Vesuvius on horseback. It was an amazing experience for everyone... experienced or not!! Berry was so in control and the horses are very placid. A great family activity. Highly recommend it.
