Pozzo di San Patrizio, Orvieto

4.2
Pozzo di San Patrizio is an architectural feat that plunges 53.15 m (174.4 ft) into the ground. A set of 248 steps goes into the vertical drop with windows that open into the central well shaft. Look for the Latin inscription on the well, which translates as, "What nature stinted for provision, application has supplied." The well was created to provide water to Rome in the event of a siege. Pope Clement VII commissioned it when he took refuge in Orvieto after the fall of Rome in 1527. Pozzo di San Patrizio is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Orvieto Edition.

  • Extraordinary engineering! We really enjoyed it. Be aware that there are no handrails, as shown on photo on the A-board ouside of the well, but it isn't slippy and well-worth a visit.  more »
  • An engineering well wide on 13 meters and deep almost 54 with 70 windows that make the descent and the ascent not too dark. Who goes to the well throws a dime in the water, fed constantly by the underground source of San Zeno, hoping that their desires come true. A moment x We also chilling from the heat of the beautiful Orvieto.

  • This amazing well was built in the early sixteenth century where the Pope had a shelter in one of the many sacks Rome had to see in its history. Perfect example of integration of engineering audacity and architectural decor.
  • Great places for photos. It’s an easy walk. Some up hill but completely family friendly. My 7 year old did fine
