More than a geological attraction, Orvieto Underground offers tours of an underground city. Inhabitants spent 2,500 years digging cavities into the earth, which overlap and intersect beneath the modern structure of the city. This location connects us to an ancient and mysterious pre-Roman people: the Etruscans. The caverns have served as galleries, cellars, cisterns, and more. Medieval families of nobility had access to these caves via secret escape tunnels. Wear shoes for walking up and down many steps. Tour guides speak fluent English. Orvieto Underground Reviews
A journey in time and history. The undergrounds are a little bit exaggerated regarding their importance, but they are very nice to interact with. We had a wonderful visit with a very good guide. I... more »
Having taken the tour previously we were no less impressed. It is truly amazing! The underground caverns are spacious, however, the stairways from level to level are a bit tight. Railings are... more »
Great tour of two underground caves beneath Orvieto in English with a very knowledgeable and personable guide. The tour group was small and the tour entered two separate caves. The first was larger and was more industrial in function - mining and olive oil presses. The second cave was smaller with more steps required that wound through caves used to raise pigeons. It provided a unique insight into the structure of the hill-top city and the everyday use of these caves by the residents of the city from ancient times to the present. Later, during dinner, the restaurant manager overheard us talking of the tours and took us through a small tour of their cave which they used for wine making and group events.
Very interesting tour. We bought tickets after we arrived in Orvieto for the day and waiting about 30 minutes for our English-speaking tour to begin. We had around 25 people in our tour group so that wasn’t too bad. The tour itself took about an hour and was very informative about the city and the underground that had been built.
