The Basilica of San Gaudenzio is a church in Novara, Piedmont, northern Italy. It is the highest point in the city. It is dedicated to Gaudentius of Novara, first Christian bishop of the city.

It was built between 1577 and 1690 following the destruction of the old Basilica, ordered by Emperor Charles V.

The Basilica itself was built by Pellegrino Tibaldi; however, the monumental cupola was designed by Alessandro Antonelli (who also designed the Mole Antonelliana in Torino). The cupola was completed in 1887; it is 121 metres high.

  • Not the oldest big church in Europe, but with lots of character and an elusiveness something this big ought not have. The tall spire may be seen from around the city, but it is surrounded closely by buildings -- it is hard to get a good view of it. As you get close it will disappear behind a rooftop.
  • This church is worth visiting, famous for it's 121 meters high dome, this dome is visible from afar, it has a Latin cross plan with a single nave and with three chapels on each side, with beautiful frescoes, paintings, and at the center of the nave there's a huge chandelier with wrought iron flowers, and the original statue of the Savior, you can visit the dome too but you need to make a reservation.
