  • Walked up the steep street from town and although the church was shut was rewarded by a great view over Mezzegra and a peaceful area to sit. Impressive looking church.  more »

  • The church of St. Abbondio is of noble structure and stands majestically on a large terrace carved into the mountain in a panoramic and dominant position. The origins are much older than the 18th-century architectural forms that characterize it today. The primitive church, dedicated to the Holy Bishop of Como, stood where the parish house is today; in the absence of sources, it is not known the events that led to his erection, nor the subsequent ones until 1500. It is interesting, however, to dwell on the origin of the dedication of this church, since there is little dissemination of the title of churches in Sant'Abbondio along the banks of the Lario. The interior is presented to a single aisle with five chapels enlated by marble balustrades. The major is in the center, raised on three steps in pink marble, and its altar also stands on three steps. The tabernacle is elegantly composed with ageminature processing made of pearl mother and colored marbles in shades of white, yellow and red, developed in floral patterns. The same technique and materials are used in the richly decorated altarpiece. Among the tortile columns of black marble stands the statue, in stucco, of St. Abbondio attributed to the work of Stefano Salterio. It represents the holy mitrate with at its feet an angel that holds the pastoral. The side chapels, whose marble balustrades are closed by wrought-iron gates, are four, joined by two half-church, dedicated : to Our Lady of Carmine and to the SS. Crucifix, the Blessed Virgin and the Sacred Heart. From the churchyard, a fabulous view of the lake, you can admire the Gulf of Venus with the famous Villa del Balbianello and the Tremezzina with the background of the Grigna. Many weddings celebrated by foreigners fascinated by the Church and the panorama.
