Palazzo Pfanner, Lucca

4.2
#3 of 96 in Parks in Province of Lucca
Nestled among sweet-smelling citrus trees, Palazzo Pfanner dates back to 1660, when it was commissioned by the Moriconi family, members of the merchant noble class. The palazzo's magnificent Baroque garden is not to be missed, with its copious flowers, forest plants, and 18th-century statues of Greek deities. At its center, you'll find an octagonal fountain and lemon house adorned with lions and a basilisk--the emblem of the Controni family, who took ownership of the palace in the late 1600s. After a stroll in the ancient bamboo cane, yew, and magnolia-shaded garden, head inside to see the 18th-century frescoes adorning the residence. You'll also find period furnishings, sacred objects, and a 14th-century statue of Archangel Michael. Don't miss the exhibit of ancient medical instruments and texts that belonged to Dr. Pietro Pfanner around the turn of the century. • A Renaissance palace in a medieval town, it attracts a lot building has some history but it’s not a place you’d visit to see renaissance highlight- you’d go to Florence, Rome, or France.  more »
  • Very reasonably priced to view the gardens plus some sections of the palazzo. Within the walls of Lucca; easy to fine and well worth the visit.  more »

  • private estate of an erstwhile mayor of Lucca...recently renovated...beautiful garden...not much to see other than his surgical instruments...got a sense of how the well offs used to live
  • The palazzo and the garden are interesting, but not worth the €6,50 entry fee. I'd recommend walking along the wall and enjoy the view of the garden from there.
