Lido, Lido di Venezia

The site of the Venice Film Festival, Lido runs 11 km (7 mi) along northern Italy but is separated from the mainland by a strip of water. The sandbar island is home to 20,000 Venetian residents and a handful of casinos and hotels. Many of the hotels are near a wide beach along the Adriatic Sea. This spot inspired Thomas Mann's novel "Death in Venice." The sandbar, now a tourist haven, once was home to the doge of Venice, as well as to one of the first settlements in the region.
