Visit one of the birthplaces of the tuna canning industry at Ex Stabilimento Florio delle Tonnare di Favignana e Formica, on the island of Favignana just off the coast of Sicily. The 3.2 hectare (7.9 acre) site includes the former factory, which was remodeled in 1878. The Florio family, former owners of the plant, pioneered the now-widespread technique of canning tuna in oil to increase its shelf life. Explore the museum to see artifacts from the surrounding area, from Roman vessels to biographies of former cannery workers. Learn about the history of the tuna industry and the canning methods developed by the plant since its inception. Free guided tours are included in the admission price. Ex Stabilimento Florio delle Tonnare di Favignana e Formica is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , world travel planner Edition.

  • Lovely museum, kids enjoyed everything related to ancient history and sea battles. The tour was just the right length too, lots of interesting facts about tuna fishing.
  • Such a beautiful surprise in a really beautiful small island! We popped up spontaneously right after dinner and found out the tour was about to start: they told us about the punic war with a great immersive cinema experience and brought us around explaining the history of the Florio family as well as the tuna industry here on the island. I don't know if there are tours in other languages but it's worthy to ask. I'm quite sure also it's possible to visit also without guide. Entry cost:6 euro
