  • The Castello sits a top of the town, with wonderful views across the valleys. It is not habitable and is in a poor state of repair. Having said that, I would recommend a visit if you are in this town....  more »
  • Grottole stretches over the plateau of the Murge Materane, behind the dam of San Giuliano, along a hill that serves as a watershed between the middle courses of the rivers Bradano and Basento. The city, whose name derives from Cryptulae, or the numerous caves that had developed, for a long time, a local handicraft related to the realization of pottery is among those settlements for-certified by the Lombardi Gastaldato of Salerno and, Around the ELEVENTH century, belonged to the lordship of Romano da Matera. Conquered by William Popeye of Iron around the 1061, at the end of the same century it results in the possession of the Loffredo of Matera. More reliable documents date back to the Norman age, when in 1133 it became a fief of Adam Avenello and, between 1150 and 1168, of Belmonte coal. They succeeded the Marchesano, until they reached the hands of Roger of Lauria and the Monteforte, and passed to the leap Orsini and the Zurlo. In the SIXTEENTH century it passed definitively to the Orsini until the Caracciolo and the Spinelli; We know that from 1738 until the NINETEENTH century the feud was held by the San-Severino of Bisignano. We enter in a short and suggestive corridor of about 6 meters until it opens in a half-yard of about 4x4 meters that should correspond to the central courtyard of a phase Svevo-Angioina in which the castle took a quadrangular physiognomy with Reinforced appendices, but whose traces and phases are not entirely traceable. The considerable degradation of the plant, corroded and rich in numerous layers of plaster, does not allow to identify in the walls the extension of the appendices which, at least in Planimetry, correspond in the two wings in front of the seriore nucleus, the one datable to the XV-XVI century. To this last period, in fact, corresponds a doubling of the volume of the castle that invaded the rocky bottom in which laboratories were made. The central tower, which falls within the typology of the XI century constructions together with mountain Brindisi, Craco, Monteserico and Satriano, is yet another monument of the Norman age of particular value, of which Basilicata is rich in a singular way compared to other Neighbouring regions. Throughout the period, the first historical dwelling of Grottole was probably remodelled, the Quadrangular tower that connects to an imposing palatial structure of importance, the so-called Baronial Palace.
