Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Liguria / Italian Riviera / Genoa / Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno
One of the largest cemeteries in Europe, Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno sprawls across a hillside and contains several important sculptures and graves. Among some of the notables buried here are Oscar Wilde's wife Constance Lloyd, Fabrizio De André, Ferruccio Parri, Giuseppe Mazzini, and Nino Bixio. You can find maps at the visitor’s center to navigate the area more easily, and booklets are also available to explain the statues and graves. Mosquitoes can be a problem here, so consider bringing bug spray. To find out how to plan a trip to Genoa, use our trip itinerary maker.
Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno Reviews
When we were traveling through Italy - we stayed in Genoa just to see Staglieno. After seeing it featured in documentaries and books I was keen to see it for myself. I’m so glad we did! The sculptures... more »

The Nobility and the Genoese bourgeoisie of the past centuries, though tacked with taccagneria, did not skimp on means and money to leave an imperishable memory of their passage in this valley of tears. Angels woman and women Angel, children flown early, elderly, animals and then again putti, symbols, sensual young women and opulent matrons. Secret passages, treasures hidden in the groves above. Everywhere poignant melancholy. Priceless works of art, some, such as The Angel of Judgment of Monteverde, are unearthed all over the orbe terraqueo. I don't go any further, the pictures speak for themselves. They come from all over the world. Mica fools.....
Absolutely amazing sculptures! The best I've ever seen yet (thanks ViasatHistory short series :) Some statues do look like they are alive (marble eye lashes, why not?). Indeed, some pieces could've been kept in better condition, yet it's an old and still functional cemetery with all burials and repairs going on. Free parking near the place. We've entered for free, though some say there's admittance fee.
Very impressive. Really fill of time death and glory. Maybie spend 3 -4 hr.s is enough... quite big space to see and look.
