The Baptistery of St. John, Florence
Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Tuscany / Province of Florence / Florence / The Baptistery of St. John
The Baptistery of St. John is one of the oldest buildings in the city, constructed between 1059 and 1128. It's renowned for the three sets of bronze doors. Observe how the eight lower panels of the south doors depict the virtues of hope, faith, charity, humility, fortitude, temperance, justice, and prudence. The most famous set, the east doors, are a copy; the originals are being preserved in the Duomo's museum. You still get a sense of their importance and you can admire the depiction of "The Story of Joseph." Inside the baptistery, be sure to look up at the domed, mosaic ceiling. The ceiling is amazing. Looks much smaller inside than out. There Is a lot of scaffolding up at the moment around the walls for restoration work but still a remarkable place well worth a visit
It's the baptismal hall right next to Duumo. It is the baptismal hall, which has the so-called Gate of Heaven. Because there are many people in Duomo, you can visit it in the early hours and enjoy a very comfortable view of the interior. There are parts that don't feel like pictures, so it's a good idea to go in and look around. There are also a lot of vendors around. If you don't need anything, you'd better avoid it.
