Cappella Brancacci, Florence

#16 of 96 in Museums in Florence
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Specialty Museum
A side door at the Santa Maria del Carmine takes you into Cappella Brancacci, filled with frescoes by some of Italy's most revolutionary Renaissance artists, and known as “the Sistine Chapel of the Early Renaissance.” Masolina da Panicale's works, including “Expulsion from the Garden of Eden” at the front left, are particularly notable for their emotional realism, which was unparalleled at the time. Michelangelo studied here as a youth, many years before his work on the Sistine Chapel. Pick up the guidebook for information about the biblical stories unfolding in the frescoes.
