4.7
A Romanesque structure from the 11th century, Basilica di Sant'Abbondio features well-preserved frescoes inside its apse, and exquisite geometric relief details around the windows. • The basilica of St. Abbondio is a Romanesque church in Como. At its side stands a monastery built in the Middle Ages, which today, after being restored, houses the Faculty of Law of the University of Insubria. It has a very simple, rectangular plant without a transept, divided into 5 aisles by cylindrical pillars and a multitude of columns composed of stone tacons and topped by a remarkable variety of capitals, from simple ones reminiscent of the two forms geometrics: the cube and the sphere to the Corinthian or those decorated with free motifs. The church is home to Romanesque bas-reliefs and a complete series of frescoes from the mid-14th century. Under the main altar are preserved the relics of the patron. The structures of the Early Christian basilica, discovered during the restoration work begun in 1863, are still marked in the floor of the church with dark marble slabs, while at the ancient openings is placed light marble. There are several frescoes, the most beautiful definitely... are the absides!! In short, a real wonder to discover if you come to Como, even if it is not located right in the old town, but still close enough to the city center... near the questura!!! On the day of San Abbondio, the 31st of AUGUST patron of Como are also organized free guided tours with dedicated staff .....
