The mountaintop fortress of Rocca Calascio is situated in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. At an elevation of 1,460 m (4,790 ft), it's the highest fortress in the Apennines, looking out over the mountains and the Plain of Nevelli. First established as a watchtower in the Roman era and rebuilt as a castle in the tenth century, the fortress makes an appearance in several movies, such as the Richard Donner film "Ladyhawke."   • Extremely impressive, especially at sunset. Panoramic point in the middle of the Gran Sasso Nature Park. 360-degree view. It is reached with a few minutes' walk from the parking lot.
