Chiesa di San Giacomo Maggiore, Bologna

4.3
The Basilica of San Giacomo Maggiore is an historic Roman Catholic church in Bologna, region of Emilia Romagna, Italy, serving a monastery of Augustinian friars. It was built starting in 1267 and houses, among the rest, the Bentivoglio Chapel, featuring numerous Renaissance artworks.
A community of hermits founded by the Blessed John the Good of Modena had established itself near the walls of Bologna, along the Savena river, as early as 1247. They founded a monastery with its church, dedicated to St. James the Greater (San Giacomo Maggiore). The hermits were merged in 1256 by the pope with other eremetical communities of the region to form the Order of Hermits of St. Augustine, with one of their number being elected the first Prior General of the new Order. As they then needed a larger religious complex within the walls, in 1267 construction was undertaken of the new church in the present location. The edifice was finished in 1315, but its consecration took place in 1344, with the completion of the apse section. The church, built in sober Romanesque style (with some Gothic elements such as the ogival windows), had a single nave with visible trusses and ended with a polygonal apse-chapel and two square chapel.

  • The church was built vertically in the form of a temple on the streets of Sanboani, and there were many chapels inside. On the right side are the multi-winged altarpiece of Paolo Veneacciano, the chapel of the Bentivolio family, which was a leading aristocrat of Bologna, in the innermost left of the inner circle, and at the main altar is Francesco Francha's "Virgin and Saints of the Throne", On the right-hand side of the wall is Lorenzo Costa's "Virgin and Bentivo-Rio family" and it was beautiful.

  • Monumental church accessed from an elegant side porch. The interior is interesting but the chapel of Bentivoglio stands out, an authentic masterpiece built at the end of 400 in the moment of maximum splendor of the house. What about it? Amazing! Tip: On Saturday morning the chapel can be visited inside from 9.30 to 12.30. An appointment not to be missed!

  • This is a huge gothic church built to glorify the bentivoglio family of 15 c Bologna and there is a chapel dedicated to the family which is open on Saturday mornings to see the masterpieces of paintings by Ferrarise painter Costa. One is of the family itself and on the other wall is a magnificent depiction of Triumph of Death and Triumph of Fame, the detail is stupendous!
