Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Emilia-Romagna / Province of Bologna / Bologna / Basilica di San Petronio
The 15th largest church in the world, Basilica di San Petronio is the main place of worship of Bologna. The basilica has been home to the sacred relics of its namesake since 2000, but its claim to fame is its history of sacred instrumental and choral music. Two grand organs installed in 1476 and 1596 often fill the main chapel with music. In the 17th century, astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini designed a sundial that's in the paved ground outside the basilica on the left. At 66.8 m (219 ft), it is the longest sundial in the world. Basilica di San Petronio Reviews
This place has very interesting architecture, beautiful sculptures, very adorable paintings No fee for go inside, but 2€ if you want to take pictures more »
Святой Петроний - это епископ Болоньи в V веке, который впоследствии стал святым покровителем этого города. В XIV веке город поручил одному из архитекторов возвести гигантский собор в готическом стиле... more »St. Petronius was the bishop of Bologna in the 5th century and later became the patron saint of the city. In the 14th century, the city commissioned one of the architects to erect a giant Gothic-style cathedral that was to surpass St. Peter's Basilica in size. The Pope did not like it, and he had a great influence on Bologna at that time, so the dimensions were reduced. Construction of the cathedral went several centuries, but in the end, and did not finish, the facade is lined with marble only half. The view, it must be said, is strange and amazed by its half-heartedness (finishing)
Beautiful cathedral right in the heart of Bologna! A must see when you visit, missing the top of its facade but nonetheless steeped in history and full of beautiful artworks...but most importantly it contains the kind and welcoming presence of God!! Don’t forget that there’s a loving Creator waiting there for you with loving arms - why else would people in the past and now in the present give their lives (some literally) to offer this love to you!!! Forget about how someone in the church hurt you or how that bloke outside was rude to you or how rich the church looks and ask why not sell it all and give it to the poor, see past the art to the Creator. Ask him to reveal himself to you during your visit...and you’ll never be the same..
Beautiful open church with wonderful views of the skyline of the terrace for a small fee. There's also a small fee to take photos inside the church.
