#1 of 18 in Historic Sites in Ascoli Piceno
In the center of Ascoli Piceno in the Arringo square is Cattedrale di Sant'Emidio, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Emidio. Originally built during the eighth century, the cathedral was continually restored and modified over the centuries, with the addition of towers, extensions, and art pieces. The interior's dome is adorned with a 19th-century fresco by Cesare Mariani representing the history of Saint Emidio, the patron saint of Ascoli Piceno. Also of great interest is the polyptych altarpiece kept in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Designed by Renaissance artist Carlo Crivelli, it is considered the most important work of the goldsmiths of the Marches. • The cathedral itself is extremely beautiful and well worth a quick visit. Unfortunately the catacombs/crypts are not officially open and I would say that there is no guarantee that you are allowed to enter them which is a bit unfortunate as they are one of the unique things about this cathedral.
  • Beautiful cathedral but especially interesting is the amazing polyptych by Carlo Crivelli on the right of the transept. Interesting crypt as well with possibly reused columns
