Built in the 11th century in a Romanesque style, Basilica di Aquileia represents an immaculately preserved Roman Catholic church with intricate mosaic floors. The floors have been covered in transparent flexi protection so that visitors can walk along them and take in the whole masterpiece. • The current patriarchal Basilica of Aquileia was built by patriarch Poppone in 1031, then in the middle of Romanesque period. The exterior facade, of harmonious proportions, is preceded by a porch and flanked by the mighty bell tower of the same era. The interior of the Basilica, three aisles, is devoid of the medieval floor to allow the amazing vision of what was the mosaic floor of the first Basilica of Aquileia (perhaps the first Christian Basilica in the world !) In fact, in 313 Constantine issued the Edict of Milan with which he granted freedom of worship to Christians and already the following year, in 314, the first Basilica of Aquileia had ended, as confirmed by the dedication to Bishop Theodore who is in the mosaic floor. The mosaics of the primitive floor are absolutely beautiful and trace the Roman mosaics, naturalistic, of the time. We therefore have various images of animals and fish, as well as the story of the prophet Jonah and the whale, symbolizing the resurrection of Jesus. All exceptional and unmissable! A must-have for those who love history and art!!
