Explore the remnants of the ancient Greek culture at Valle dei Templi, which has been on the World Heritage list since 1997. This national monument, one of Sicily's main tourist attractions, contains the remains of seven Greek temples, all built in the Doric style. Most of the ancient temples here were excavated and restored during the middle of the 19th century under the direction of archaeologist Domenico Antonio Lo Faso Pietrasanta. The site includes parts of tombs and catacombs from the fourth century. Several Roman and Byzantine necropolises lie in an area used for burial purposes since ancient times. Choose from several guided tour options. With our international travel planner, Agrigento attractions like Valle dei Templi can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.
Valle dei Templi reviews
Truely a must see when on a trip around Sicily. Beautiful temples and overall well preserved structures. Bring plenty of drinking water & hats during summer season (April through to September). more »
We took a trip from Palermo to Villa dei Templi and it was much better than expected. We took a private guide who told us about the wonderful history of this place and made the trip even more... more »
A fabulous place. An archaeological site, one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greece art and architecture. It takes at least a day to cover the area and may be more to truly understand the history. The place is always crowded like any other famous tourist sites, therefore it's hard to take photo of the sites without human crawling all over the places. It's a bit far from the city center. Therefore, you should take a bus early to arrive there around 8 before the sites open to be the first tourist to enter, then quickly take photos of the places you like. The signs of the temples are informative but not quite sufficient if you love history. I advise to get an audio tour which is available in several languages including English so you can follow and see the story that connect all the sites together. It is worth the money. If you travel there in summer, it's super hot and almost no shade at all. So be sure to bring water and get hydrated, if you enjoy history like I do, you may have to spend a day under the sun. I in fact visit it twice.
Beautiful place. Been driving 2 hours and i can say that the trip was worth. Take the ticket that includes the trip through the gardens, they are beautiful. We started from the top then went down into the valley. We could've taken the taxi back up to the parking lot but id say it's not worth it.
