Gran Sasso, Abruzzo

#7 of 63 in Nature in Abruzzo
Gran Sasso d'Italia is a mountain located in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. The Gran Sasso forms the centrepiece of the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park which was established in 1993 and holds the highest mountains in continental Italy south of the Alps and is part of the Apennines, the mountain range that runs the entire length of the Italian Peninsula. Teramo and L'Aquila are the nearest cities to the Gran Sasso, while Assergi, at the base of the mountain, is the nearest village; Rome is by road.
The three main summits of the Gran Sasso are Corno Grande (shown here), which at 2,912m is the highest peak in the Apennines, nearby Corno Piccolo and Pizzo Intermesoli, which is separated from the other two peaks by Val Maone, a deep valley. Corno Grande and Corno Piccolo's ash coloration come from their limestone and dolomite composition. The peaks are snow-covered for much of the year though the snow cover appears to be less each decade. Corno Piccolo is referred to as, "The Sleeping Giant". This is due to the appearance of a profile of a reclined face. This view of Corno Piccolo is evident when viewing the mountain from Pietracamela, a small town near Prati di Tivo, on the north side of the mountain. Corno Grande and Corno Piccolo with their rough vertical walls provide serious rock climbers with challenges..

  • The Gran Sasso is truly a special place. He noticed Italian and Hollywood cinema. Many movies shot in this place out of time. From "They Kept Calling Trinity" with Bud Spenser and Terence Hill to "Lady Hawke" with Michelle Pfeiffer. A unique place in the world where you can breathe a silent atmosphere, satisfying almost mesmerizing. The colourful sky is almost the backdrop to the stage made of karst rock, striking headlands and breathtaking views. The car visit is already a sight but I advise you to take a walk to live to live to the full mystery, that of nature that has painted in this place one of his most beautiful paintings. Sheep, Abruzzo shepherds and grazing animals will keep you company during the journey reminding you that everything began here, a rural world that in the past we left and to which we ask for asylum to escape from those thoughts that life in the city makes us pay like an account Salty. I hope I've been helpful. Thank you and the next trip...

  • A wonderful place; I was lucky enough to walk the road that crosses it in a wonderful afternoon with the massif crowned by the thunderstorm and the prairies caressed by the sun. One of the most beautiful and exciting travel experiences.
