The Second Temple Jerusalem Model, Jerusalem

4.8
The Second Temple was the Jewish Holy Temple which stood on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem during the Second Temple period, between 516 BCE and 70 CE. According to Jewish tradition, it replaced Solomon's Temple, which was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BCE, when Jerusalem was conquered and part of the population of the Kingdom of Judah was taken into exile to Babylon.
Jewish eschatology includes a belief that the Second Temple will be replaced by a future Third Temple.
The accession of Cyrus the Great of the Persian Empire in 559 BCE made the re-establishment of the city of Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the Temple possible. According to the Bible, when the Jewish exiles returned to Jerusalem following a decree from Cyrus the Great, construction started at the original site of Solomon's Temple. After a relatively brief halt due to opposition from peoples who had filled the vacuum during the Jewish captivity, work resumed ca. 521 BCE under Darius the Great and was completed during the sixth year of his reign (ca. 516 BCE), with the temple dedication taking place the following year.

  • What an amazing and helpful exhibit. It puts the whole city in perspective, and allows you to take that understanding with you when you go to the actual city. Even the Shem - made up of 3 valleys in the city is visible from the upper railing. You can also visit the Shrine of the Book with a copy of the scroll of Isaiah from the dead Sea scrolls.
  • This was my second visit to the Model of Jerusalem and each time, it is overwhelming in a very good way. It is fantastic to see and learn at the same time. Our tour guide Roni Winter was so unbelievably knowledgeable, the visual of where Jesus walked, where He was crucified, where He must have been taken for burial... it takes my breath away...
