One of the world's most sacred places historically identified as the site of the second Jewish Temple, Temple Mount is presently dominated by some of the most important Muslim shrines, including the Dome of the Rock. In Judaism, the hill has been known as the site of Mount Zion, the location of Solomon's Temple, and as the place where Abraham nearly sacrificed his firstborn son to prove his devotion to Yahweh. According to the Talmud, the hill is also the site from where God collected the dust to create Adam. For Sunni Muslims, this is the place from which the Holy Prophet ascended to heaven. Marked by a long history of religious conflicts, the hill remains one of the world's most contested holy sites. The Mount can be reached through 11 gates on Herodian walls--only one being reserved for non-Muslims. Getting into the site can be a challenge--it is only open during very specific time slots and, thus, lines are often long. Arrive early for your best chance to get in, and be aware that modest clothing (for both men and women) is required.
