#6 of 10 in Neighborhoods in Jerusalem
Me'a She'arim stands as one of the oldest neighborhoods in Jerusalem and is home to the strict Orthodox Hasidic people. Its name originates from the Torah, depicting the community of "100 gates." Limestone buildings covered in Hebrew line the cobblestone streets. Visit the fruit and vegetable market and pick up a fresh challah at the bakery. Immerse yourself in the rich religious culture, however be aware that strict "modest" dress codes need to be followed. Also, during the Shabbat, visitors are not allowed to take photos, use mobile phones, smoke, or drive. Men need to cover their heads when entering synagogues. • I think that a passage by Mea Shearim is not without interest when you go to Jerusalem... but without a preconceived idea. This is not, by far, the most interesting to see in Jerusalem except to see a conception of existence a little out of time. We don't go there like we would go to see a city, we try to understand a centuries-old history but also without trying to interpret history. It's a bit like visiting a neighborhood that has kept features of antiquity in Europe's cities without trying to reconstruct the history of past centuries. In any case the "voyeurime visit" did not come here as elsewhere. The inhabitants are above all people. The living environment is what it is and that's it. You have to respect people the way they are.

  • If you want to know a culture you have to enter inside it to understand what it looks like, it feels, it breathes and how it is perceived to the outside. It's a must-have experience. As much as you've read, reality outweighs your imagination
